The Best Standup to See in LKF July 18, 2017 Events Lifestyle Work life. Sex life. No life. Every day we’re surrounded by more aggravation than reasons to be cheerful. As part of Lan Kwai Fong’s service to the community, this summer we’re offering good vibes and good humour. All this week, the Fringe Club hosts The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow Hong Kong. On offer until Sunday is the freshest and funniest from Australia’s biggest comedy festival. There’s stand-up, sketch, slapstick and all-around silliness for a tiny ticket price beginning at HK$250. Get your ticket from The Fringe Club or Art Mate. If you’re heading out for a good chuckle, why not make an evening of it at LKF’s most fun venues? Here’s our suggested itinerary. Hong Kong Fringe Club 2 Lower Albert Road, Central; +852 2521 7251 www.hkfringeclub.com Happy Hour Look, we know this is a different sort of happy, but happiness takes many forms. LKF has a heap of happy hour deals, with Mercato’s aperitivo deal among the best. Buy-Two-Get-One-Free drinks start at HK$38 and are served with complimentary plates of chef-selected Venetian Cicchetti. Mercato 8/F, California Tower, 32 D’Aguilar Street, Central; +852 3706 8567 www.mercato-international.com Champagne There’s a reason why champagne and happiness are linked. If bubbles are your thing, look no further than an indulgent free-flow of Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial and all-you-can-eat oysters and Spanish caviar for HK$328 a guest at Dragon i. Dragon-I UG/F, The Centrium, 60 Wyndham Street, Central; +852 3100 1222 www.dragon-i.com.hk Fun Food There’s fussy food, there’s fast food and there’s fun food. Mexican? It’s fun finger food and a huge laugh for big groups determined to have a top night out. Things at Brickhouse get real interesting after a few kick-arse margaritas. Brickhouse 20 D’Aguilar Street, Central; +852 2810 0560 www.brickhouse.com.hk Chocolate Anything There are few things more delicious, decadent and fun than chocolate. Loaded with Tryptophan and Phenylethylalanine – neurochemicals that fire up when we experience joy – take our advice and stop by these chocolaty hot spots. Cocktails Forgo the sophistication of the Gimlet and ignore the class in a glass full of Old Fashioned, go tropical and get wild. LKF is home to the awesome Wahtiki Island Lounge, a tiki bar that serves inspired cocktails made to 1950s recipes. The décor here is as funky as the drinks list. Apart from slings and other colourful cocktails, there’s the Champagne Canoe, with its immense amount of champagne and fruit in an exceptionally large canoe carved of wood. Wahtiki Island Lounge 3F Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham Street, Central; Book: +852 2793 0308 www.facebook.com/wahtiki More Lolz Laughter is the best medicine. We’re not sure for what, since this piece of “wisdom” doesn’t actually have a kicker. Regardless, if stand-up, cabaret or open-mic madness is your thing, here are some regular options. Honi Honi have staged some wild Uncensored Open Mic Cabaret nights this year. These Sunday night specials are in two acts: off-the-wall comedy and unhinged cabaret. TakeOut Comedy run comedy nights each week featuring Hong Kong’s best and comedians on tour. They also throw open the mic for would-be funny folk with between five and eight minutes of material. Later this year, TakeOut are organising the 11th Hong Kong International Comedy Festival. Performances get underway on October 26 and the final is four weeks later.
