The Odd, Fun and Frozen World of Margaritas

Of all the cocktails, the popularity of the margarita means it has stood the test of time.

Rumoured to have been created in 1938 by Carlos “Danny” Herrera at his Mexican restaurant Rancho La Gloria, the cocktail was a tribute – or aphrodisiac – for a cabaret dancer. Marjorie King posed nude in the 1920s, earning enthusiastic support. Ms King was allergic to many spirits, but oddly not to tequila.

The drink has a simple ratio to follow (a classic is one part tequila; half a serve each of lime juice and triple sec) but there are plenty of takes on the classic. Here are five funky favourites in LKF.

Brickhouse

Brickhouse has margarita making down pat. So much so, they’ve got two on their menu. Our pick is the original. The Brickhouse Margarita made up of blanco rum, Damiana liqueur, pineapple juice, agave nectar and lime. Brickhouse has been ranked No.1 by Foursquare for margaritas in Hong Kong for over three years too!

Los Sotano

Los Sotano might just be our favourite basement in Lan Kwai Fong. This relative new comer, which opened just last year, has an impressive selections of tequila and, of course, a great margarita. They even have a quirky neon sign that says “Tequila Makes My Clothes Come Off”, so you know their margaritas are legit. Try the signature Los Sotano Margarita, made with Avion Silver Tequila, Fresh Live, Agave and an orange liqueur.

Employees Only

Employees Only always delivers at the next level. Since their opening last year, they've been a consistent favourite for those in the know. You won’t find the margarita on the menu but, just like all the classics, the team can handle it. The Paloma, which is on the menu, is essentially a modern take on the margarita. This one comes with Cimarrón tequila, shaken with lime, grapefruit and agave.

Hidden away on the seventh floor of the LKF Tower is the bar for Buenos Aires Polo Club. Their Tommy’s Margarita is, in a word, fantastic. It's the perfect balance between salt and tart – with a single ice cube that melts slowly without diluting your drink. Plus, we just live the general atmosphere here!

The Woods

Victoria Chow’s bar, The Woods, gets a lot of love. Her margarita features four peppers as well as a jalapeno-infused Ocho Blanco Tequila, coupled with a lime zest salt rim. Back in the day, their slushy-style frozen margarita with tequila, grilled pineapple, cinnamon, orange liqueur and fresh lime and pineapple juices was the bomb. Can we have it back, please?
