After a long, hot day, nothing tastes as good as a crisp, cold beer. The only thing better is a crisp, cold, locally brewed craft beer. Hong Kong is having a bit of a craft beer moment, with more than a dozen independent brewers creating interesting blends for beer lovers.

With so many names on the market, it can be a little overwhelming. Which is why we’ve highlighted five of the most interesting breweries in Hong Kong to check out, because it’s always good to support local businesses!

Mak’s Beer

While many breweries are owned by expats and inspired by traditional flavours, Mak’s Beer is 100 per cent Hong Kong. Owners Mak Ho-lun, Mak Po and Lo Tak-chi have lived their whole lives in the city and are determined to create a beer that truly represents Hong Kong in all of its glory. They craft their brews to suit the local palette, with flavours like longan, dates and goji berries. One of the newer names in town, they officially launched in 2016 and are already a steady favourite.

Moonzen

This family-run brewery is known for unconventional, unpasteurised and unfiltered brews, using ingredients like Sichuan peppercorns and chilies. Home-brewers Michele and Laszio Raphael started Moonzen when Laszio was made redundant. It’s truly a passion project – they even rigged up their brewery kit themselves! They have limited edition, provincial and year-round brews, but we recommend the Monkey King amber ale, with notes of caramel and peaches.

Young Master Brewery

Opened in 2013, Young Master Brewery helped kick-start Hong Kong’s craft brewing movement. Today they’re Hong Kong’s largest and most awarded craft brewery with a huge selection of beers to their name. They do everything from a classic pale ale to more avant-garde brews like a foeder aged mixed culture forest berry sour, and even a few Hong Kong-inspired ones like the salty Cha Chaan Teng Gose, made with local salted lime. They often collaborate on cool beer projects and always have something seasonal to try!

Yardley Brothers

There’s nothing like good old-fashioned sibling rivalry, especially when it comes to beer. It’s the driving force behind cult-favourite craft-brewery Yardley Brothers, founded by Luke and Duncan Yardley. Devotees love their powerfully flavoured beers, like the hoppy and floral Lamma Island Pale Ale, with caramel and malty notes. Looking for something a little different? Try the straw-gold Quit Your Job! Saison, with a spicy bouquet and hints of banana and strawberry.

Gweilo

You can’t have a list of Hong Kong beers without mentioning the tongue-in-cheek Gweilo, though they’re not technically a brewery. They create the recipes and outsource the brewing to Hong Kong Beer Co. Their brews are familiar with a twist – like a slightly bolder IPA that goes well with spicy food. They have six core beers, a limited range, a collaboration range, and they’ll soon be introducing barrel ageing and sour programmes.
