#MyLKF with Instagram Star IndulgentEats

One of Hong Kong’s top Instagrammers sits down to talk life, dumplings and dog-friendly spots

Another month, another #MyLKF. This time, Lan Kwai Fong sits down with @IndulgentEats, a New York City-transplant who quickly turned into one of our favourite #foodstagrammers. After almost ten years in the Big Apple, @IndulgentEats (aka Jen) and her finance-fiancé moved to Hong Kong in 2017, and she’s been snapping away ever since.

Jen loves to eat, of course (and she takes some of the best food photos in town!), but she also posts about fitness, travel, her wedding and most importantly her adorable pup Crosby. Read on to find out some of her favourite spots, photography tips and more, and don’t forget to follow her on Instagram!

How do the restaurants and bars compare to New York?
I love that both cities have seemingly endless restaurants of diverse cuisines to try. Compared to New York City, Hong Kong is lacking fast-casual restaurants (especially good “slice” joints and healthy options). There are a lot of Western restaurants here, but the shortage of Mexican and Latin food makes me seriously miss NYC! But the spectrum and calibre of fine dining options in Hong Kong is on another level, as are the free-flow brunch buffets and dim sum, of course.

How about the party scene?
Because it’s a larger city, there’s definitely more diversity in New York, and more niche places that cater to your tastes. But I love how the party scene in Hong Kong brings so many people of different backgrounds together in one area, and how easy it is to hop from place to place in Lan Kwai Fong. Some of my most memorable nights were the result of spontaneously running into people on the street and seeing where the night went.

Are you more of a Big Night Out or Quiet Night In girl?
I’m a Big Night Out girl, followed by a quiet night of Netflix to recover. One can only stay out until 5am so many nights of the week!

What are some of your favourite spots in Lan Kwai Fong?
I’ll happily spend hours on the roof at CÉ LA VI for their 2-for-1 happy hour. Racks is probably my most frequented place in LKF and Draft Land is my new favourite bar for their awesome cocktails on tap and bar snacks. Frank’s makes me feel like I’m back in NYC, and their all-vinyl soundtrack is dope. I love to dance, so I go to Cassio for deep house, Oma for techno, Tazmania Ballroom for a mix of everything, and Volar or Drop to end the night.

What are the most Instagrammable dishes around Lan Kwai Fong?
Secret momos (if you know, you know), Wagyu uni from 298 Nikuya Room, Taco platters & churros from Brickhouse, and the Porterhouse from Porterhouse.

We know you love dumplings – where's your favourite spot?
Cheung Hing Kee pan-fried buns are my fave! Just love all that soup and those crispy bottoms, and that there are always piping hot ones ready to eat so there’s practically no wait.

Any advice for taking great photos in low lighting?
NEVER use direct flash! Use a second light source instead. I carry a portable LED light with me to get professional grade photos, but you can either use the iPhone Notes app on full brightness or the flashlight on someone else’s phone and wrap it with a white napkin or a white tissue (the pocket Tempo tissues work!) to create a softer light that you can point at your subject – just don’t be surprised when people gawk at you.

We love Crosby! Can you tell us a bit more about him?
We got him in NYC 3 years ago. He’s a fluffy Goldendoodle – cuddly, playful, and barely sheds!

Do you have any favourite dog friendly spots to take him?
Since we live in Midlevels, we go to Fini’s and Posto Pubblico in SoHo all the time. We also take him in a cab over to Honbo in Wan Chai when we want burgers – Crosby loves it since a few fries always end up on the ground, and we love their triple smashed patty burger.

What’s been your favourite LKF memory so far?
We had friends from NYC visiting and took them to most of the spots I listed above plus a stop at Stormies (RIP) for one of the most fun nights ever. We never wanted to sleep!
