Jay-Z's new album 4.44 became available on Apple Music, Amazon and Tidal, among others, at the start of this month, unleashing some of the best reviews since ice-cream on a summer’s day. A closer inspection reveals the answers to the rumours that have made Mr Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter one of the most powerful figures on the planet.

The scandal of Jay-Z’s rumoured infidelity – last aired on Beyoncé’s Lemonade – returns to centre stage and we hear his side of the story to the infamous elevator video “You egged Solange on, knowing all along all you had to say you was wrong… let the baddest girl in the world get away… I don’t even know what you woulda done”. He tells us “what good is a menage a trois when you have a soulmate?” and asks why you would risk your family knowing that. It’s an apology in song.

“4.44 is a song that I wrote, and it's the crux of the album, just right in the middle of the album,” he revealed during a interview with iHeart radio. “And I woke up, literally, at 4.44 in the morning, 4.44 AM, to write this song.” The track Moonlight alludes to the Oscars drama that saw La La Land wrongly given the best picture award over Moonlight. It’s a “commentary on culture and where we’re going,” says Jay-Z.

There are references to Kanye West and other salacious moments from the life if Jay-Z, and it’s all good listening but what if you don’t care? What if the 13th album from Jay-Z was your first? Would you care?
