Five Easy Holiday Decorations for Your Small Apartment

Spruce up your flat this season with these adorable festive decorations

The sweaters are out, the lights are up and the air is buzzing with festive frivolity. So that can only mean one thing: Christmas is coming! Even if you don’t celebrate, December can be one of the most magical times of the year, full of good cheer, good food and so much more. Hong Kong, being the international hub it is, is full of people who are far away from home this season, but that doesn’t mean they can’t bring a little holly jolly home!

Sure, Hong Kong apartments are notoriously small – but there’s always room for a decoration or two. Don’t let your teeny-tiny flat be the Grinch that stole your Christmas – check out these easy decorations perfect for shoe-boxes!

Rosemary Bush

A beautiful full fir tree is beautiful, but it’s also expensive, gigantic and bad for the environment (most Hong Kong trees are being imported from the United States!). So instead, opt for a far more manageably sized rosemary bush. It easily fits on your counter top or kitchen table, it smells great, and it will last you years if taken care of correctly! You can throw some dainty fairy lights on it, and even a star if you like (take inspiration from this beauty by Jackson and Perkins)– and you can always nab a few fresh springs for your cocktails too! You can find your own rosemary bush online, at the nearby flower market or even at your favourite local florist!

Scented Candles

A simple, but impactful way to add festive cosiness to your home this season is by lighting up a scented candle. There are so many options on the market now, from gingerbread house, to apple pie, and even mulled wine and fir tree – that you’re sure to find something you love. We love The Candle Company —they have candles and diffusers inspired by The Night Before Christmas – and Home Essentials for finding that perfect seasonal scent! Look for candles that are made with essential oils and 100 per cent soy, beeswax or coconut wax (basically, no paraffins), and of course, make sure that any oils they use are safe for your pets and children!

Wreaths

If you’re compromising on your Christmas tree this year, why not go all out with a beautiful handmade wreath? Van der Bloom florists are offering a number of stunning versions that will look great on your door. We love the Jingle Bells, which is accented with red roses, bundles of cinnamon and tied up with a red velvet bow, but for something a little ‘cooler’ the Ice Crystal wreath will make you think of snowy days far, far away. To be honest, you can’t go wrong here – they’re all beautiful. But hurry up and order before they’re all sold out! (PS – If you just can’t bear to part with your beloved fir, Van Der Bloom florists are offering adorable miniature trees this year too!) If you really want to be extra, head to Pottinger Street and look for small, 4-inch wreaths that you can hang on your kitchen cabinets or use as adorable place cards when you have friends over!

Lighting

It goes without saying that lighting can totally change the feel of a room. Just because we’re in a tropical climate doesn’t mean you can’t make yourself a hygge escape and pretend you’re somewhere snowy this season! Ditch the harsh florescent bulbs this winter and opt for softer lighting. Of course, fairy lights are everyone’s favourite- you can hang them on the walls or stuff them in jars for a calming gentle glow. Another great way to add some Christmassy ambiance is with candlelight – so stock up on some pedestal candles and tea lights when you’re looking for your scented candle.

Festive Soaps

Don’t neglect your bathroom! Mornings can be hard, but one way to make them a little bit easier is by giving yourself something to look forward to, like super decadent bath products and holiday-scented soaps. The Body Shop has a whole line of Peppermint Candy Cane products, and Lush has tons of tempting treats too, like their super cute Holly Berry massage bar. You’ll be smelling so good, you’ll be on everyone’s nice list this year!
